Travel Safety with
your IG
Many of us like to travel with our dogs. This is just a friendly reminder to
always travel with the safety of our pets in mind.
I’m sure you have seen dogs hanging out car windows, or in the back of truck
beds. It may appear that the pet is enjoying his/her trip, but is that pet
traveling safe? No one wants an accident, nor do we plan to have one (that’s why
it’s called an accident). But if you travel with your pet LOOSE inside your
vehicle, you may be asking for trouble. One thing my vet has observed over the
years, are eye injuries that stem from a pet riding in the car with it’s head
out the window. Road dirt, or anything kicked up by other vehicles can get in a
dog’s eye. Another big risk is the dog can be thrown from the vehicle if in an
accident.
When a pet travels loose inside a vehicle they are not protected from injury if
an accident occurs. If you were rendered unconscious and someone came to assist
you and opened your door your pet in it’s frighten/confused state could escape
and be hit by another car, or run off and become lost. I know this is worst case
scenario, but better to be safe than sorry. That is why this breeder HIGHLY
suggests you ALWAYS take your pet along with you safely inside a crate. I
suggest the plastic crates that are called kennels. Not any kind of soft crate,
or harness. The kennels are the best and safest to transport your pet.
I know many people like to ride with their pet on their lap, but if you have
airbags and you are in an accident the airbag can actually kill you pet. This is
also why a doggie harness is not a good idea either.
You should always keep your veterinarian’s contact information attached to your
crate. Either by masking tape, or sticky label, or luggage tag. Also remember to
have your info on the crate as well.
It is great fun to take our pets along with us, just remember to keep it safe!!!
